the hated flower

Exhibited: 11th - 15th February 2014

Location: Coningsby Gallery, London, UK

A solo exhibition of sculptures, prints and a site-specific installation ‘The Hated Flower’

‘The Hated Flower’ is the artists reaction to the negative response to Carnations and Chrysanthemums within British floral culture. Law created an installation with these flowers to showcase the beauty of their form and colour. The immersive, multi sensory piece invited the viewer to lay across a bed of flowers whilst staring up into the hanging sculpture above.

 Prints

Still Life is a series of three diptych photographs. Each diptych presents a sculpture in two complementary parts; original and decayed.

Law has paid direct homage to the still life painters of the Dutch Golden Age by recreating famous works by painters such as Jan Davidsz. de Heem and Ambrosius Bosschaert. The series, photographed by Tom Hartford, includes Law’s regeneration of de Heem’s Festoon of Fruit and Flowers (c. 1635–84) with the work Jan Davidsz. de Heem (2014) with the notable addition of tiny human figurines, which serve to remind the viewer of the complicated relationship between man and nature.
